The police registered a case against 16 accused of committing an organised crime to scam people by luring them to buy land to earn quick profits. The Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh said that the complainant Govind Singh Pundir registered a complaint at the Rajpur police station stating that he buys and sells land as a business. A man named Amjad Ali, a resident of Chhutmalpur area, approached his elder brother in August last year. He told him that Baba Amrik Singh of Budha Dal Committee in Maharashtra was looking at the land for building a school and ashram. However, the committee will check the soil of the land before purchasing it. Considering this, the complainant said that they provided a sample of soil to him. The accused along with eight other men approached him a month later and said that the committee did not approve the soil quality. They suggested that the complainant could buy land from farmers in Karnal, Haryana at a lower price and sell it to the organisation later for a profit.

As per Pundir, the accused told him that since he and his accomplices are associated with the organisation, they cannot directly buy and sell land to it. The SSP said that the complainant contacted the farmer and paid Rs 21 lakh in cash and cheque as advance payment. The accused showed a cheque of Rs 51.6 crore and promised to give it to him after depositing three per cent of the amount in advance to the organisation’s account. He deposited Rs 1.5 crore to the account. After a few weeks, the accused claimed that the Income Tax department seized the organisation’s money and was demanding Rs three crore to release them. Pundir deposited the amount again. This way, the accused duped about Rs 7.32 crore from Pundir. The SSP said that at least 18 cases are registered against all the accused in various police stations of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. Investigation is ongoing to nab culprits, he added.
