House tax hike very nominal: Dehradun Mayor

Tax main source of funds for salaries, developmental works

Following the hike of up to 20 percent in-house tax in most categories by the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun, the Dehradun Mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’ said that the hike in house tax had been quite nominal. Talking to media persons a day after the hike in house taxes was announced, the mayor said that the area under MCD has grown while the developmental requirements of the city also have to be addressed. It is from the tax that salaries of municipal employees have to be paid along with facilitation of developmental works in the city. The corporation was to raise the house tax by about 40 percent but the mayor directed that the hike is limited to 20 percent. This increase is very nominal, stressed the mayor. It is pertinent to mention here that while the house tax increase will affect residents in 60 wards of the MCD, the 40 newly created wards recently brought under the purview of the municipal corporation will remain exempt from the tax as announced earlier by the Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat. In the case of people who have already paid their house tax for this year, the tax will be recalculated according to the new rates. They can pay the balance with next year’s house tax. Those who have not paid yet will have the amount calculated as per the new rates. The new house tax rates will be applicable for a period of four years until March 2022.
