Hindi film director arrested by Haldwani police in cheque bounce case

Popular Bollywood director, Kawal Sharma has been arrested in Mumbai by Haldwani police after he kept evading a court-ordered sentence since 2022 in a cheque bounce case. He had directed about 16 Hindi films featuring stars like Sanjay Dutt, Mithun Chakraborty, Govinda, and Jeetendra. He had started his movie-making career with the once popular film Jeete Hain Shaan Se followed by Hiralal Pannalal, Namak, Zimmedaar, Gunahon Ka Devta and Ustad.
According to the police, while he was short of money in 2013, he borrowed Rs 35 lakh from a model with a deal to return Rs 50 lakh along with profit of the film which was about to be released within 30 days from its release. He handed cheques of Rs 50 lakh which bounced. A case was filed against him in 2015. Consequently, Sharma was sentenced to one year imprisonment with a fine of Rs 51, 10,000 by the court of the additional chief judicial magistrate, Haldwani on January 17, 2019.. But despite repeated summons and warrants issued against him, he remained absconding.
Acting on the warrant issued by the Haldwani court, Sharma was arrested from City Mall Compound under Ring Road police station limits, in Andheri, Mumbai. Following
his arrest, he was being produced in the court, police said.
