Himalayan Institute Hospital Trust (HIHT) has initiated a water conservation drive in its campus. The expertise of the H P Uniyal of the Uttaranchal Koop  fame were used in the project in which the rain water will be used for non-domestic purposes. The Vice Chancellor (VC) of the Swami Ram Himalayan University, Vijay Dhasmana launched the project on Friday and dedicated it to India’s Save water campaign.

“The project will increase awareness of the students about scarcity of clean water and sensitize them on the importance of conservation of water, a precious natural resource. We are all aware that the water crisis in the world is getting critical by the day. When we realized that 80 percent of the water requirement of the SRHU campus could be met with or replaced through rainwater harvesting we decided to go ahead with the project,’’ he said.

The HIHT claimed that after three months of planning and construction of the project, a whopping amount of about two crore  litres of rainwater is being collected, stored and re- used for non potable purposes like toilet flushing, cleaning and ground aquifer recharge. A total of 9000 square meters of roof top areas of the Nursing College, Medical College and RDI Building at SRHU and HH campus have been prepared to collect roof top rainwater. One lakh fifty thousand litres of water thus collected is treated and filtered through a natural process with the help of Uttaranchal Koop method, for which Uniyal received the National Urban Water 2008 Award. The water is collected in a 1,50000 litre underground storage tank.
