Song dam project gets environmental clearance

Environmental clearance has been granted to the Song dam project planned in Dehradun district. Chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat thanked the Union Environment and Forests minister Prakash Javadekar for this. Rawat said that with the environmental clearance being granted, there will not be any problem in starting work on this much awaited and important project. The execution of this project is among the priorities of the state government.

The CM further said that with the construction of this project, gravity based drinking water supply will be facilitated to the population of Dehradun city and its suburban area’s estimated population of upto 2050. This project will also help in power generation while availability of water for irrigation will boost agricultural production, he added.

It is pertinent to mention here that the NITI Aayog has been requested for financial assistance for this Rs 1,200 crore project. The height of the Song dam will be about 148 metres while its reservoir will be spread across an area of about 76 hectares. It is also worth mentioning here that with this project slated to facilitate gravity based supply of drinking water, the crores of rupees spent annually on electricity will also be saved.
