Heavy rain/snowfall likely in State from January 24 to 28

Uttarakhand is likely to experience rain/snowfall/thunderstorms from January 24 to 28 due to an active western disturbance. Heavy rain and snowfall warning has also been issued for some districts. According to the meteorological centre, heavy rain/snowfall is forecast at a few places in Uttarkashi, Chamoli and Pithoragarh districts and at isolated places in Dehradun, Tehri, Rudraprayag and Bageshwar districts on January 24, 25 and 28. Heavy snowfall is likely to occur at places located at altitudes of 3,000 metres and above in these districts.  Thunderstorms accompanied with hail/lightning and intense showers are likely to occur at a few places in Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Nainital, Champawat, Udham Singh Nagar and Haridwar districts.

Further, thunderstorm accompanied with hail/lightning likely to occur at isolated places in Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Nainital, Champawat, Udham Singh Nagar and Haridwar districts on January 26 and 27.

According to the meteorological centre, light to moderate rain/snowfall/thunderstorm is very likely to occur at most places in Uttarakhand on January 24, 25 and 28 while light to moderate rain/snowfall/thunderstorm is very likely to occur at many places in Uttarakhand on 26 and 27. Snowfall is likely to occur at places situated at altitudes of 2,800 metres and above on January 24, at places at altitudes of 2,200 metres and above on January 25 and 26 and at places located at altitudes of 1,800 metres and above on January 27 and 28. Further, the snow depth is likely to increase gradually from January 24 to 28 and reach between five to seven feet at places located at altitudes of 3,000 metres and above, between two to four feet in

places located at altitudes of 2,500 metres to 3,000 metres and between one and two feet in places located at altitudes of 2,000 meters to 2,500 metres.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, the meteorological centre has forecast very light to light rain/snowfall/thunderstorm at isolated places especially in higher reaches of Uttarkashi, Chamoli and Pithoragarh districts while dry weather is likely to prevail in the remaining districts. Dehradun is forecast to experience mainly clear to partly cloudy skies with the maximum and minimum temperatures likely to be about 19 degrees celsius and nine degrees celsius respectively on Saturday in Dehradun.
