Facing acute shortage of the doctors, the medical health and family welfare department of Uttarakhand received 138 new medical officers (bonded) on Friday. These new MOs would be posted in the Community Health Centre (CHC) and Primary Health Centres (PHC) located in remote and mountainous areas of Pauri, Tehri, Nainital, Almora, Champawat, Bageshwar and Pithoragarh districts.
After passing out from the government medical colleges of Uttarakhand these students who were under a bond to serve in the state health services were admitted in the state medical and health department as MOs. These MOs were sent on an orientation course in different CHC and PHC and after its completion were asked to join different districts on Friday.
The Director General (DG) health services, Dr Ravindra Thapliyal said that 138 new MOs joined their duties in the offices of Chief Medical Officers (CMO) on Friday. He said that these MOs would be deployed by the CMOs in the hospitals. These young medicos would serve in the health centres located in mountainous areas of state for a period of five year. The induction of these new MOs (bonded) is expected to give some strength to the state health services reeling under severe shortage of doctors.
The departmental data reveals that as many as 698 posts out of 1523 posts of medical officers are at present lying vacant. A staggering 50 percent of vacant posts of doctors have rendered the entire health system of state seriously ill.
The medical officers (Bonded) are those young medicos who at the time of admission in the medical colleges enter into a bond with the state government that they would serve in the health department of state after completion of their education. In lieu of this bond, they have to pay highly subsidised fees during the period of their stay in the medical colleges.
However, instead of fulfilling the condition mentioned in the bond many medicos after completion of their studies refrain from joining the state health services. Recently the health department has taken action against many such officers.
