Union minister reviews Panchayati Raj & Rural Development works

The Union Panchayati Raj minister Kapil Moreshwar Patil reviewed the execution of the Panchayati Raj and Rural Development ministry here on Thursday. Speaking on the occasion, he cited the example of best practices in various States and exhorted that a model Gram Panchayat should be developed in Uttarakhand. He said that adopting the cluster based approach will enable the Panchayats to undertake more work at less cost when it comes to solid waste management. The minister said that the Panchayat development indicator is an achievement of the ministry, adding that it will work as a mirror for the Panchayats and enable them to evaluate their condition. Further, various departments concerned will also be able to evaluate the situation regarding their targets and their achievement, he said.

The State’s Panchayati Raj secretary HC Semwal informed the Union minister about the progress made in the execution of various departmental schemes in the State. He said that work on enhancing water storage capacity and management of solid and liquid waste is being undertaken in the Panchayats with the tied fund under the 15th finance commission.  Natural streams are being rejuvenated, drinking water pumping schemes are being renovated and hand pumps and water coolers are being installed as part of these efforts. Along with this, waste segregate centres have been made in all the Panchayats. The secretary further informed that the plastic waste and inorganic garbage collected by Panchayats is being transported through block Panchayats to the compactors established by the district Panchayats at the block level. A presentation of the works being undertaken by the Rural Development department was also made in the meeting.
