HC seeks report on lawyers’ strike

Saturday, 17 November 2018 | PNS | Nainital— The High Court of Uttarakhand has sought details of strikes undertaken in 2018 by the district bar associations of Dehradun, Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar. The details have been sought from the district judges of the respective districts within six weeks. According to the case details, Dehradun resident Ishwar Shandilya had filed a public interest litigation during 2016 stating that the Dehradun bar association had been undertaking strike every Saturday for 34 years. This is causing hindrance in judicial works due to which petitioners are not getting justice at the proper time. By undertaking strike on Saturday, the lawyers have considered it to be a holiday. After hearing the petition, the high court division bench of chief justice Ramesh Ranganathan and justice Alok Singh directed the district judges of Dehradun, Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar to provide details of strikes undertaken by the bar associations of these three districts during 2018. The details are to be provided within six weeks in the case which is next fixed for hearing on January 2.
