Tuesday, 29 May 2018 | PNS | Nainital — The High Court of Uttarakhand has directed the State Government to ascertain the status of reservation afresh in the municipal councils of the State. The high court also cancelled the State Government’s notification dated April 28 regarding the status of reservation in the municipal councils for the urban local body elections. It will be recalled here that the state government in its final notification dated April 28 had released the status of reservation in the 39 municipal councils in the State. The Government had kept two municipal councils- Srinagar and Bazpur out of this purview. Following this, Kichha resident Mushtaq Ahmed had challenged this decision of the State Government in the high court. The petitioner had contended that the State Government had purposely kept the Srinagar and Bazpur municipal councils out of the purview of reservation, which was not right. As the state government failed to provide a satisfactory reply in the court, the single bench of justice Sudhanshu Dhulia cancelled the Government’s notification dated April 28. The high court has further directed that including Srinagar and Bazpur municipal councils in the list, the status of reservation should be ascertained afresh.
