Govt waives off marriage registration fees under UCC

The Uttarakhand government has decided to provide an exemption from registration fees to those who register marriages under the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). The marriages for which the exemption is being provided should have taken place before January 27, 2025. The exemption will be provided till July 26.

Officials informed that the UCC came into force in Uttarakhand on January 27, 2025. Under the code, it is mandatory to register marriages solemnised between March 26, 2010 and January 26, 2025. The registration fees at present is Rs 250 for marriages which have taken place during the said time period. However, considering the convenienceof the citizens and their involvement, the State government has decided to waive off the registration fees.

In addition to this, the citizens who have already registered their marriages under earlier provisions and personal law are also required to provide information or acknowledgement of that registration on the UCC portal. This procedure is meant only for providing information and there is no fees charged for this.

The officials further informed that so far more than 1,90,000 marriages have been successfully registered online under the UCC. The entire process of marriage registration is completely digital. Due to this, the citizens are able to access the registration facility online without any official hassle. The State government has appealed to the citizens to take advantage of the timer period of registration fees exemption. The use of the free of charge marriage registration should be maximised to ensure the mandatory registration of marriages under the UCC, the officials added.
