Governor approves premature release of 175 inmates on R-Day

Taking a humane stand, the governor Lieutenant General (retd) Gurmit Singh has granted his assent to the proposal for the premature release of 175 prisoners serving long sentences in various jails of the state on Republic Day. Since the formation of the state, this is the highest number of inmates granted premature release simultaneously on compassionate grounds by the governor. One of the prisoners to be released prematurely was serving a sentence in the prison for more than 47 years.  Seven other prisoners were serving sentences in different prisons for more than 40 years.  Of these, 26 prisoners were serving sentences of more than 30 years. 

Premature release of nine women prisoners has also been approved by Singh. The inmates to be released prematurely include 27 from Sampurnanand Camp in Sitarganj, 52 from central jail in Udham Singh Nagar, 63 from Haridwar district jail, one each from Pauri district jail, Chamoli district jail, central jail Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) and central jail Fatehgarh (UP), two from central jail, Bareilly (UP) and 23 other prisoners. The governor has granted his approval for premature release of these inmates on compassionate grounds and on the basis of their good conduct.
