Jayalakshmi HK is a scientist, musician, clinical nutrition consultant and medical astrologer who recently visited Haridwar for special session on nutrition and dietetics for diabetic children at Ram Krishna mission hospital, held series of lectures for corporate groups in SIIDCUL, Max hospital and AIIMS Rishikesh. Founder of Prajnanam Vedic Centre, she was a child prodigy in music having begun her classical music journey learning from her mentor Guru Shri Maniswamy, Aasthaan Vidwan of Mysore Maharajas at the age of four and rendered music concerts at the age of 10. Post graduate and doctorate in food science and nutrition, she was honoured with recognised awards Dr BC Roy Memorial award for clinical nutrition, Bhale Bharath Excellency Award for music therapy and others for her contribution in the field of Vedic knowledge in the past 26 years. Jayalakshmi has been associated as scientist, researcher in collaborative projects of University of Groningen, Netherlands and Karnataka University Dharwad. She has published many scientific research papers on clinical, conventional and community nutrition. Her wisdom comes through her parents Yashoda and Krishnamurthy HS. Talking to The Pioneer, she shared her views on various aspects.

What is the basic difference between Vedic nutrition and western concept of nutrition?

Western science of nutrition works based on the inferences drawn from observations made over a couple of decades. It is mainly based on physical clinical parameters of human body like body type, age, sex, weight, BMI while our Indian rishis of yore had drawn the facts (not the inferences) thousands of years ago exploring five ‘koshas’ (sheaths) of a person. Our Vedas are fact based knowledge books to which the western science is now waking up. Body, mind and spirit realms have been recently accepted by WHO. In my opinion, if both Vedic (Ayurvedic) and Allopathic systems of medicine are integrated, this world would be occupied by healthier and happier beings paving rhw way to healthy society.

What is the impact of current dietary trends in Indian cities and what changes need to be made for a healthier society?

Food must be taken as per Ritu Chakra (seasonal changes). The local and seasonal fruits, vegetables and cereals are most suited to one’s body for balancing our five elements -Agni (Fire), Vayu (Air), Akasha (Ether), Prithvi (Earth) and Jal (water). The current trend is shifting on practicing dietary meals without considering five elements in dietary habits. This cannot make healthy society. That is the reason lifestyle diseases are on rise these days. The more we turn to Vedic nutrition, the more shall we be in tune with nature and less prone to diseases and disorders. To systematise our healthcare system, it should be given a as a mandate by governing bodies to inculcate the ‘Ahar Vigyanam’ (Indian science of nutrition) as given in Vedas.

How would you divide the world population with predominant tattvas (elements)

The whole population of the world is spread equally in five elements of fire, air, ether, earth and water with fraction of 20 per cent each. Nature keeps itself and its beings balanced with these elements. We can assess which element is more predominant in a particular human being through some genuine diagnostic tools which includes physical parameters like complexion of skin, hair texture, waistline and body type and other aspects.

How do the constituent elements influence the inclination of people?

Every person is unique on this earth. One or two elements are predominant in each person on this earth. People with predominant Akasha or ether are naturally blessed. They do not have much toxins and are broad minded who forgive others easily. Their dietary requirements also vary according to the predominant element in the body. Jal tattva people require less dosage of medicines. Jal and Prithvi people have low basal metabolic rate. Jal tattva people need less calories. They are excellent in planning and are good resource persons. Agni and Vayu tattva people are more focused while ether people are more balanced.

Being involved in music therapy, how does music affect a person?

Indeed one of the best ways to reduce stress is music therapy. Any pleasant music below 40 Hz is soothing. Malkauns Raga is for stress relief and for low BP people it is good and it also reduces anger. Bhoop Raga if sung after 9 pm enhances oxytocin levels in body, it helps correct reproductive disorders. Kalyani Raga is to forgive everyone, Sarangi Raga enhances spiritual braveness, Raga Neelambari is for insomnia. Such Indian songs must be popularised which have good classical compositions, may be from films or folk music. Yaman Raga can be sung at anytime. However, harsh music above 60 Hz casts negative impact on human mindset, delinquent minds prefer such harsh sounds.

You are the youngest panel member of High Court of Karnataka and other reputed organisations. What is your success mantra?

Divinely blessed, I am the first to upscale the many scientific authentications on the concept of music therapy of Saama Veda and medical astrology (Graha chikitsa) Ashtanga Chikitsa of Ayurveda  globally. The principle of ‘Satyamev Jayate’ is ultimate to me. I collect positive vibes when I deliver any talk so that makes impact on people. When the five elements are balanced, proper intellect emerges which helps to upscale others. Upscaling ecofriendly things around, spreading the knowledge of health and nutrition I want to train everyone to know this Vedic health and nutrition science. Over a lakh ‘sadhaks’ (seekers) have been trained.
