In just 17 months, the Emergency department at Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) Hospital performed a total of 1,894 surgeries from August 2024 to December 2025. According to the hospital officials, this included 1,165 major surgeries and 729 minor ones. Data from the hospital administration shows that the Orthopaedic and General Surgery departments faced the highest demand during this period. Specifically, the Orthopaedic department conducted 1,103 surgeries (737 major and 366 minor), while general surgery recorded 525 operations (326 major and 199 minor). Gynaecology, ENT and other emergency surgeries were also carried out regularly.
The officials further said that looking at the monthly data, the highest number of surgeries had been conducted in November and December 2025, with December alone seeing 161 emergency surgeries—the highest ever recorded for the hospital. This highlights GDMC Hospital’s role as a life-saving centre for patients across the State suffering from severe accidents, trauma and complex medical conditions.
The principal of the hospital, Dr Geeta Jain stated that the emergency services are operating at full capacity 24/7. Despite limited resources, the teamwork of doctors, nursing staff and paramedics has made this large-scale operation possible. “Our goal is to ensure that every critical patient receives timely, high-quality treatment,” Jain said. She also said that the increasing number of emergency surgeries reflects the growing trust people have in government hospitals.
Plans are underway to further enhance emergency services by adding more specialists, modern equipment and expanding the operating theatre capacity. Previously, patients, admitted to the emergency department due to accidents or other reasons, would often face long waits for surgery. “Now, patients are offered immediate surgery based on their health reports, benefiting not only those from Dehradun but also patients referred from across the State,” she said.
