The national highway to Gangotri which was blocked at Helgugad on Wednesday evening following heavy rains was reopened for traffic after about 40 hours on Friday morning bringing relief to travellers and pilgrims stuck in different locations. The risk of landslide is persisting on the highway.

The landslide zone activated at Helgugad about a month ago caused a blockage of the highway on Wednesday. About 3,000 travellers and pilgrims were reported to be stuck at various points of the route. The administration had advised the travellers to stop at secure locations. Disaster management officer Devendra Patwal informed that the debris have been removed from Helgugad and the vehicles are being made to pass carefully. The police, State Disaster Response Force and Border Roads Organisation personnel were also deployed on the spot.
