In the multi-crore scholarship scam in the state, Uttarakhand police filed two more cases in Nainital and Udham Singh Nagar districts on Friday. In Nainital a case has been filed against the principal of Om Santosh Private ITI, Chhutmalpur (Uttar Pradesh), his middle men, the employees and officers concerned of Punjab National Bank, Fatehpur- Chhutmalpur for allegedly falsifying documents for embezzling government money. Similarly, in Udham Singh Nagar the cases have been filed in Jaspur and Bazpur police stations against middle men for allegedly scamming scholarship money in connivance with Sandesh College of Education, Rewari and MD College of Education- both in Haryana – respectively. The employees and officers concerned of local banks involved in the both the cases have also been held accountable.
According to the information provided by police headquarters, the then social welfare officer of Nainital released the scholarship amount of 19 students to Om Santosh Private ITI. The cheque for Rs 7,84,700 was submitted at PNB bank in Chhutmalpur. The bank accounts of all 19 students were opened in the same bank. During the investigation when the Special Investigation Team (SIT) physically verified these students, it was found that none of the listed students ever took admission in the educational institute nor did they ever receive any scholarship money.
When the SIT team investigated bank details it was found that maximum portion of the scholarship amount that was supposed to be awarded to these students was first embezzled by institute from the department under the pretext of their fees. The rest of the money that went to the fraud bank accounts of the students was later transferred into the bank account of the institute.
Few students also said that some representatives of the institute in the year 2014 lured them into providing their documents under the pretext that they will get scholarships and degree from the institute, but later they were neither provided degree nor they were given any scholarship.
In the similar scam at Udham Singh Nagar, FIR was registered in Jaspur police station against Sandesh College of Education for conniving with local middle men and embezzling government money. They are also being charged for allegedly preparing falsified documents and using them to open bank accounts.
In Bazpur police station the case is being registered against MD College of Education, the middle men who connived in the scam and the employees of the local bank concerned.
According to an official, there are about 75,000 listed students, in the names of whom the institutes received scholarship money. In order to physically verify all the students it will take more than a year.
