Four-day weather warning issued for U’khand

Rain, thunderstorms, hail & squalls forecast in various parts of State from May 21 to 24

In what may come as a relief to many from the heat but also give a cause for concern in some areas, Uttarakhand is forecast to experience a rainy spell from May 21 to 24. Weather warnings have also been issued for the said period. According to the meteorological centre, current meteorological analysis and numerical weather prediction models indicate that two western disturbances in succession as upper air systems in mid and upper tropospheric levels are likely to affect Uttarakhand from May 21 to 24. Under the influence of above systems, light to moderate rain/thunderstorm are very likely to occur during the said period with peak activity on May 23 over Uttarakhand.

According to the weather warnings issued, thunderstorm accompanied with hail/lightining and intense shower are likely to occur at isolated places on May 21 and 22. On May 23 and 24, thunderstorm accompanied with hail/lightning and intense shower are likely to occur at a few places in the mountains and at isolated places in the plains. Thunder squall with speeds reaching 70 to 80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph are likely to occur at a few places in the plains and at isolated places in the mountains on these two days. Further, heavy rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places in Uttarkashi, Dehradun and Tehri on May 23 and in Nainital, Pithoragarh and Bageshwar districts on May 24. The hail may damage plantation, horticulture and standing crops, injure people and cattle at open places, the squall may result in uprooting of trees and breaking of branches.

Apart from this, the meteorological centre has forecast that light to moderate rain/thunderstorm are very likely to occur at many places in the mountains and at a few places in the plains of Uttarakhand on May 21 and 22. Further, light to moderate rain/thunderstorm area very likely to occur at most places on May 23 and at many places on May 24.
