Dehradun police have arrested four accused in connection with the theft of Rs 13,000 from an ATM in Doiwala on Friday. Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh informed that a complaint was filed at Kotwali Doiwala by the current branch manager of Axis Bank, Dinesh Kuniyal, stating that cash was stolen from the Axis Bank ATM located in Doiwala on October 7 and 8.
The theft was carried out by placing a duplicate (dummy) cash tray above the actual cash tray inside the ATM, which prevented customers from completing their withdrawals. After receiving the complaint, a case was registered.
According to Singh, necessary instructions were issued to the police team assigned to Kotwali Doiwala. This team collected vital information about the suspects by reviewing footage from approximately 100 CCTV cameras installed near the incident site. Additionally, the informer system was activated during the investigation.
As a result of the police team’s efforts, the four suspects were apprehended during a check near Purana Tiraha Lakshman Siddh Temple on Friday. Based on information from an informer, the suspects were identified as Gaurav Chauhan (21) from Dehradun, Aman Kumar (25) from Delhi, Rohit Punj and Jitendra Singh, also from Delhi. They were found in a suspicious four-wheeler with Rs 13 thousand in cash stolen from the incident, he said.
He said that during interrogation, the suspects revealed that they had planned the ATM thefts after watching videos on YouTube. They created a dummy cash tray that resembled the actual ones used in ATMs, placing it on top of the real cash trays at various ATMs.
The suspects had specifically targeted Axis Bank ATMs in the Raipur and Rajpur areas for this scheme. They intended to travel to other districts to carry out similar thefts. However, they were arrested by Dehradun police before they could execute their plans, Singh added..
