Even though the tenure of the incumbent SCPCR chairperson Usha Negi ended last month, the Uttarakhand Government has not appointed any new head of the commission. Negi was appointed as the chairperson of the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) in May, 2018 and her tenure ended on May 21 this year. The official sources revealed that as per the rules, the position of the chairperson of SCPCR has to be filled within 24 hours after the tenure of the former position holder ends. However, the State Government has not nominated anyone to the position so far, as per the sources. According to them, the government has the option to either appoint a new chairperson or extend the tenure of Negi on the basis of her performance in the last three years.

Talking about this, Negi said that she has been getting calls from various media persons and people regarding various complaints and issues associated with children but she was unable to issue any written orders as her tenure as the SCPCR chairperson ended on May 21. “I am doing my best to resolve the complaints of the issues I receive on a daily basis. However I do not hold any authority anymore to issue orders in the name of the commission,” informed Negi. She further said that she hopes the government fills this position soon as these are critical times, especially for children of the State and there are issues that need immediate attention of SCPCR. On being asked about whether the State Government would extend her tenure as the SCPCR head, Negi said, “I have no idea about the government’s decision on this matter but I hope that the government fills this position soon for the welfare of children considering the current serious conditions.” She added that whether her tenure is extended or not, she would continue to work for the welfare of Uttarakhand’s children.
