The State Election Commission has deferred the process of the commencement of the nomination for the three tier Panchayat elections in the State till further orders.  The State Election Commissioner, Sushil Kumar issued a notification in this regard on Tuesday.

The deferment of the process of the Panchayat election by the SEC comes a day after the Uttarakhand High Court had ordered a stay on the Panchayat elections in the State due to lack of clarity on reservation. The HC took note of the fact that the State government had not issued gazette notification of the Uttarakhand Village Panchayat, Kshetra Panchayat and Zila Panchayat (reservation and allotment of seats and offices) Rules 2025 and ordered a stay on allotment of reservation for post of village Pradhans, member block Panchayat and member District Panchayat. The HC will now hear the government’s plea and all other writ petitions regarding the Panchayat elections on June 25.

The process of the filing of the nomination papers for the three tier Panchayat elections in the State was scheduled to commence from June 25.

On Saturday, the SEC had announced the electionschedule in which the voting was to be held in two phases- July 10 and July 15. Following the notification the district administrations of 12 districts where the elections were to be held,  had started issuing separate notifications in the districts. The prospective candidates had also started deliberations for the polls. However the stay order of the HC has put a spanner in the process of the elections and the plan of the State government to hold the Panchayat polls.
