Eyes dry up as mercury level rises

As temperatures rise, the incidence of dryness and various eye conditions has surged, according to eye specialists. The maximum temperature in Dehradun has been hovering above 35 degrees Celsius, which has negatively impacted the eye health of people. Eye specialists said that with rising temperatures, there has been a rise in eye infections, dryness and other related issues. Therefore, it is advised that people, particularly those in the workforce, take appropriate precautions.

Senior eye specialist at Government Doon Medical College (GDMC), Dr Sushil Ojha said that the amount of time people spend looking at screens—whether on phones or computers—has grown significantly, which has also affected the eyes directly or indirectly. He said that in addition to this,  extreme heat during this period has also exacerbated the eye problems among individuals. Currently, he has observed an increase in ocular surface disorders among patients. The  symptoms like dryness, itching, redness and other eye-related concerns.

On average, there has been a 30 per cent rise in these cases among the population outside of typical patterns. In light of this, individuals are advised to take precautions, such as seeking shelter from direct sunlight and wearing protective eyewear while ensuring they do not touch their eyes with unclean hands, he stated.

Additionally, another eye specialist, Dr Amit Singh said that the increase in temperature and excessive heat has led to a rise in cases of eye allergies and infections. As a result, many people are experiencing symptoms such as burning, dryness and itching in their eyes, and in more severe instances, they may also face watery discharge. He said that there has been a 30 to 40 per cent increase in cases of eye allergies and infections among the population.

Individuals are encouraged to take precautions to address this issue by minimising unnecessary outings, wearing protective eyewear and applying lubricant to their eyes. He also pointed out that direct exposure to air from fans and air conditioners can lead to eye dryness during this time, so individuals are advised to avoid direct airflow and instead position themselves to the side of the AC or fan. He stressed that those who work are particularly susceptible to such allergies during this period and urged everyone to follow the necessary safety measures.
