Ex- driver masterminds Rajpur robbery, 3 arrested with loot

Police have arrested three accused in the case of high profile robbery which had been committed in Rajpur area on January 17 night. Notably, two men had barged into the house, held an elderly woman captive and decamped with looted jewellery and cash.
Police said that the main accused- identified as Shafat Ali (48)- turned out to be the complainant’s former driver. He had earlier worked for the house and had been removed from the job during the Covid period. Due to his frequent visits in the past, he had full knowledge of the house and knew that no CCTV cameras were installed, police said. The other two accused are his associates: Nadeem (38) and Ishtiyaq (30),
Sharing further details, police said that the accused had planned the robbery on learning that the elderly woman was alone at home. “On the night of the incident, he reached the house with two accomplices in a car. Taking advantage of the darkness, they entered the house through an open window. The elderly woman was threatened and the accused escaped with jewellery worth about Rs eight lakh and more than Rs 1.5 lakh in cash,” a police officer privy to the details said.
After receiving the complaint, police had registered a case at Rajpur police station. The team had probed the CCTV footage from nearby areas and informer inputs had also been used. On Wednesday, a police team arrested the accused trio during a checking drive near Maldevta Road.
Police recovered all the stolen items, including jewellery, cash, the victim’s mobile phone and the car used in the crime. The accused were planning to flee when they were caught, police officials added.
