Friday, 11 May 2018 | PNS | DEHRADUN– For the first time the election commission would use EVMs with Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) in the booths of Tharali assembly by- election scheduled on May 28. The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Uttarakhand, Saujanya said that the staff assigned polling duty would be given training to use the VVPAT machines at least three times to make them comfortable with the machines. She added that a campaign to make voters aware about the VVPAT machines would also be initiated in Tharali. She said that 15 out of total 178 booths in Tharali have been identified as critical and personnel of Central Armed Paramilitary Forces (CAPF) would be deployed in these centres. The election commission would deploy three companies of the CAPF in Tharali by- elections. She further added that the Video Viewing Teams ( VVT) of the commission would keep a close eye on the public meetings of the candidates and the expenses made by them. Saujanya informed that she has received a list of 40 star campaigners from both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress party for the by-polls. It is worth mentioning here that the expenses of the public meetings addressed by the star campaigners don’t come under the expense incurred by the candidates. The CEO informed that in the critical booths, web cameras would be installed to have better monitoring and surveillance. She said that the for the first time counting of the votes would be held in Tharali itself and for all preparations have been done at Government Inter College (GIC) Tharali.
