Elderly woman, neglected by sons, receives ration on DM’s intervention

PIONEER NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

A 72-year-old woman from Ajabpur, Dehradun, received her ration only after direct intervention by district magistrate Savin Bansal. The senior citizen, Saraswati Devi, had been reportedly denied ration for months despite being eligible, prompting her to personally visit the Collectorate and seek help.

The officials said that Saraswati informed the DM that although she has three adult sons, all of them live separately with their families. She survives on her widow pension and was previously receiving ration. However, the local ration dealer stopped providing her supplies, citing her name was no longer on the official distribution list.

After hearing her complaint, the DM called the district supply officer and ordered immediate action. Before any official paperwork could be initiated, officials from the department concerned reached Saraswati’s home and restored her ration card. She was given her entitled food quota on the same day.

The DM warned all departments that any form of negligence or mistreatment towards elderly citizens, women, children or the helpless will be considered punishable and will not be excused.
