86 % accidents in State caused by overspeeding, rash and wrong-side driving

Rash driving, wrong-side driving and overtaking other vehicles on roads are three major causes of 86 per cent of road accidents in the State this year, said the director of traffic directorate Mukhtar Mohsin. He said that as per the analysis of the accidents that occurred this year, 76 per cent of the total road accidents happened due to overspeeding or rash driving, eight per cent of accidents were caused by wrong side driving and three per cent happened while overtaking other vehicles from the wrong side. A meeting was held by the director via video conferencing with senior police officials of all districts to ensure authorities take necessary measures in their respective areas to minimise the risk of accidents. He asked the police and traffic police to run joint awareness campaigns from August 15 onwards to raise awareness among the people. He also directed them to act against those who do not wear ISI-marked helmets as riding without helmets or poor quality helmets also causes several accidents of riders and pillion riders every year. He also instructed to start a campaign against vehicles operating with counterfeit number plates as such cases are recently observed in many districts. He said that the main reason for running these campaigns is that after authorities imposed challan on some people, it was later found that their vehicle was at their home and not on the road. It appears that many are using counterfeit number plates and appropriate action should be taken against such culprits, said Mohsin. He said that last year the police took action in 84 cases of illegal driving by minors and this number has already crossed 384 cases this year.  He said that now PRD personnel can also be deployed for traffic management in all districts like home guard personnel. However, each district in-charge must ensure that they are deployed on duty at junctions and main routes only after providing proper training on traffic management which should be for at least seven days.
