The Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN) lost over Rs 50 crore since the Covid-19 pandemic hit Uttarakhand last year. According to Ramji Sharan Sharma, the general manager of GMVN, the economic activities of the corporation have come to a standstill since last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. He said that GMVN got some business through tourist rest homes (TRHs) during the Char Dham Yatra last year but since then, there have been no major economic activities that helped the corporation to recover the losses.

The corporation has lost over Rs 50 crore since the last year, as per Sharma. However, the GM said that he believes that if tourism will be promoted here more while providing a welcoming environment to tourists, the corporation would be able to recover the loss within a few years.

Meanwhile, the GM also informed about the preparations done by the corporation in view of the approaching tourist season in the State. He informed that there are 82 TRHs under the corporation out of which seven rest houses are being renovated. He also said that the corporation has recently constructed a restaurant in Chilla and a hotel is also under construction in Dhanaulti. “This way, we are making progress by updating our services as per the market for tourists,” said Sharma. Talking about steps taken by the corporation to minimise the risk of Covid-19 contagion among tourists and pilgrims, he said that the corporation has provided training to the staff members to protect themselves and tourists from Covid-19 disease. “Most of our staff members have been vaccinated. We also have trained the staff on how to face tourists and keep themselves safe from Covid. We have also asked them to make the tourists aware of Covid norms and ensure that these are being followed by everyone.”

Though the Char Dham Yatra has been postponed, Sharma added that GMVN is also prepared for it when it starts.
