DVMUVM to write to mayor on Sunday market relocation stalemate

PIONEER NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

The Doon Valley Mahanagar Udyog Vyapar Mandal (DVMUVM) will write to the mayor, Saurabh Thapliyal concerning the relocation of the Sunday market currently operating at Ranger’s Ground. It may be recalled that the State president of the Federation of All India Vyapar Mandal and the president of DVMUVM, Pankaj Masson had recently expressed concerns about the location of the market, stating that it had become problematic for many individuals. The organisation had observed that numerous shopkeepers and customers had attributed the recurring traffic congestion on Sundays to the location of the Sunday market. Masson had stated that as the market had lacked sufficient parking facilities, the people had been parking vehicles haphazardly on both sides of the roads, worsening the traffic logjam.  Further, the lower prices being offered at the market are drawing customers away from Paltan Bazaar, which has led to reduced sales for local vendors. In light of these issues, a meeting had been recently held with the mayor where potential solutions were discussed.

Masson earlier had also informed that the civic body had been looking into solutions, including shifting it outside the city.  At the last meeting, the mayor is understood to have stated that the market would be held at its current site for three Sundays and then it would be wound up. DVMUVM had agreed to the proposal and waited for three Sundays. But despite three Sundays having passed, the Sunday market is still operating at the Rangers’ Ground.

Masson stated that with the civic body still dithering, the shopkeepers of Paltan Bazaar have been collectively incurring losses.
