The Uttarakhand Medical Service Selection Board has started the procedure for recruitment to 1,564 nursing officers in the health department on the basis of year-wise merit. Following the efforts of the State’s Medical Health and Medical Education minister, Dhan Singh Rawat, the board has started the process for recruitment of female and male nursing officers. According to officials, the verification of the documents of the candidates will be undertaken soon. The selected candidates will be appointed in the health department after verification of the documents.

It will be recalled that on assuming charge as the Medical Health and Medical Education minister, Rawat had taken various decisions which also included filling the posts of nursing officers lying vacant for a long time. However, according to the rules the recruitment of the nursing officers was to be done on the basis of written examination. The unemployed nursing degrees and diploma holders organisation had expressed concern regarding scope for malpractice in the written examination and had sought that the recruitment be done on the basis of annual merit. Considering this, the minister had directed the medical health and family welfare department to prepare a proposal to amend the rules to facilitate recruitment of the nursing officers on the basis of merit. The proposal was presented in the meeting of the cabinet which granted its approval to it. Following the cabinet approval, a requirement for 1,564 posts of nursing officers was sent to the Uttarakhand Medical Service Selection Board. In January this year, the board had sought applications from candidates for these posts. About 10,000 candidates submitted their applications for these posts. The board’s examination controller Vijay Juyal informed that the 1,564 posts comprise 847 posts for women diploma holders, 405 for women degree holders, 212 for male diploma holders and 100 posts for male degree holders. On the basis of year-wise merit, two candidates will be called for document verification for each post. The final list of the selected candidates will be released after this. Juyal said that after completion of the selection process, the final list of the selected candidates will be submitted to the medical health director general. The process of appointment of the selected candidates to the vacant posts will be started by the directorate, he added.

Health minister Dhan Singh Rawat said that the shortage of nursing staff in the health department will be resolved considerably following the appointments of nursing officers to 1,564 posts. This will ensure provision of better medical health services to the patients coming to the government hospitals in the State, he said.
