To curb public littering and strengthen monitoring in public areas, the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) has initiated drone-based surveillance in some wards. The civic body has also started issuing daily challans based on violations captured through drone footage.

Dehradun municipal commissioner Namami Bansal informed that drone monitoring has been activated, particularly around littering-prone points where repeated complaints of public littering have been received. “There are several garbage points where people and vehicles repeatedly dump waste in public spaces. To address this issue, drones are being deployed in 15 wards for real-time surveillance,” she said.

According to officials, the drone operation currently includes a four-hour flying window, during which live monitoring is conducted. Based on the footage, challans are being issued to offenders seen dumping waste in public spaces.

“Daily challans are being issued, and incident alerts are generated regularly. Based on these alerts, legal action is being taken. Those repeatedly involved in such violations are being categorised as public nuisance and an FIR may be registered against them,” Bansal added.

Officials further added that strict enforcement has already resulted in a decline in violations and the corporation plans to expand the drone surveillance model to more wards in the coming months. The civic body has appealed to citizens to dispose of waste only at designated points or through door-to-door waste collection services.
