While addressing the Road Safety Month Awareness programme at AIIMS Kalyani in Nadia district of West Bengal on Wednesday, the Padma Shri recipient Orthopaedic surgeon and president, AIIMS Guwahati, Dr B K S Sanjay said that nearly 90 per cent of road accidents occur due to driver’s negligence and stressed that reckless driving is primarily a behavioural issue. “Behaviour can be changed and transformed at any stage of life and such programmes are aimed at bringing a positive transformation in the mind-set of young people,” he added.
He also pointed out that although India has thousands of educational institutions, including several institutes of national importance, the country still lacks an adequate number of formal driving schools. “Driving is an essential life skill and should be imparted to all youth. Education, employment, business and even recreation are difficult to pursue without safe driving or riding skills,” he stated.
He further stated that road accidents represent a major public health challenge and appealed to policymakers to ensure that institutions like AIIMS serve as nodal agencies in their respective regions to spread awareness and promote road safety across the nation.
Among the dignitaries present on the occasion were the president, AIIMS Kalyani, Dr Y K Gupta who inaugurated the programme and the director, AIIMS Kalyani, Dr Arvind Sinha.
