Dr Bisht’s views on ills of health system in Uttarakhand finds support

Tuesday, 03 May | PNS | Dehradun

The allegations of corruption in the health directorate and other issues raised by senior physician Dr N S Bisht have started getting support from the general public and other senior doctors of Uttarakhand.

On Monday senior physician Dr S D Joshi said that there is a truth in the point raised by Dr Bisht regarding the humiliation of doctors working in the hospitals. He said that the second and third generation medicines required for treating patients are not available in even tertiary care centres of the state health department. In such a condition the doctors have no other option but to prescribe them from outside and for this action they are being questioned by the authorities. The doctors should be given a free hand and they should not be treated with contempt, he said.  Dr Joshi also added though there is an acute shortage of specialist doctors in the state health services, many such doctors are deployed in the state health directorate. This practice should be avoided in the interest of the state, he said.

It is worth mentioning here that Dr Bisht stunned everyone on Sunday when during a programme held to welcome the new Director General (DG) of Health Services, he made some startling revelations. He said that instead of initiating reforms the meetings in the state health directorate are done to target doctors working in hospitals. Dr Bisht said that the doctors are being made the villains by alleging that they are prescribing medicines from outside but the fact is that the hospitals don’t have medicines for even two per cent of patients. Raising the issue of corruption and gross indiscipline in the health directorate, Dr Bisht said that it would be proper if an IAS officer is made the DG health services.
