DM stresses on STP, garbage management at District Ganga Committee meeting

An important meeting of the District Ganga Committee was held here on Thursday under the chairmanship of the district magistrate, Meherban Singh Bisht where matters like solid and liquid waste management, plastic waste control and establishment of sewerage treatment plant (STP) were taken up for discussion. 

The DM stressed the need to prepare a district specific Ganga Action Plan and said that the proposed projects in the district should be presented before the state level committee as soon as possible so that the process of their approval can be expedited. He directed the Ganga pollution control unit to set up sewerage plants especially in Joshiyara, Gyansu, Uttarkashi and Gangori and to send the proposed Aastha Path projects in Joshiyara and Gyansu areas to the State committee.

Bisht said that the cleanliness of Ganga is not the responsibility of only one department but collective effort involving all departments, adding that concrete action should be ensured in all the towns and travel stops situated along the banks of Ganga.

He directed the officials concerned to keep regular vigil to stop any kind of illegal construction on the river banks. This aside, he instructed the Swajal department to prepare an effective action plan for garbage disposal in the rural areas situated on the banks of Ganga.

The DM stressed on STP arrangements being compulsorily ensured in hotels having 20 or more rooms. Many senior officers, including ADM and SDM were present at the meeting.
