Thursday, 12 July 2018 | PNS | Dehradun — A classic example of the way the state government functions on the issues of public interest came to the fore on Wednesday as district magistrate Dehradun declared holiday in the schools in view of heavy rainfall warning  after the students had already reached the schools braving the rain. The order which was meant to provide safety to the students from rain- related troubles became useless due to the delay, something which  exposed the students to the nature’s fury. Not even a single private school followed the order as most of the schools were almost half way through their daily schedule when they received the order. The government school teachers, however, complied with the order immediately after the message was circulated on mobile phones and asked the students who had already to go home when it was raining torrentially. In the order circulated by the administration at around 8.30 am on the day, DM Dehradun, S A Murugesan ordered holiday in all the schools and Anganbadi centres on July 11 due to forecast of very heavy rain. The order directed that all education officers should ensure that all the schools in their jurisdiction are closed for the day. When asked for the order having turned into a fiasco,  the state government spokesperson and senior cabinet minister Madan Kaushik said that the district magistrates had been asked to take measures in advance on any weather- related warning. The DMs should keep their disaster related management and teams on alert in case of advance warnings, he said.
