Disaster management: Yuva Aapda Mitra training programme concludes

A training programme christened as Yuva Aapda Mitra- conducted under the Yuva Aapda Mitra Yojana and as per the directives of the secretary, Disaster Management & Rehabilitation department, Uttarakhand, concluded in Dehradun on Monday. Notably, the training took place from December 2 to 8 in Garhi Cantt, Dehradun with the participation of 50 NCC cadets of the 11th NCC Battalion in Dehradun. The participants were trained to act as first responders in disaster situations.

The ADG of the NCC Directorate in Uttarakhand and a recipient of Seva Medal, Major General Rohan Anand was the chief guest at the closing ceremony. While addressing the cadets, he stated, “Young Aapda Mitra are the true pioneers of our nation’s security and human service. Your quick decisions and courage during calamities can save many precious lives.”

The training covered various topics, including the Disaster Management Act of 2005, the institutional framework for disaster management, techniques to handle earthquakes, landslides, floods, and flash floods, first aid and injury management. Additionally, participants learned about search and rescue operations, rope techniques, stretcher construction, forest fire and urban fire management among other skills.

The master trainer Raju Shahi from the District Disaster Management Authority in Dehradun, along with trainers Sushil Singh Kaintura and Kishan Rajguru, imparted the training. They expressed confidence that the 50 newly trained youth disaster friends would strengthen the district’s disaster management system. “These young friends are expected to make invaluable contributions to the protection of human life and property by assisting the local community and administration in swift relief and rescue operations during natural calamities,” said Shahi.
