After much persuasion, high drama and politics, the district administration started the demolition of the two hotels located on Badrinath road on Thursday. These hotels, Malari Inn and the Mount view are the worst affected buildings in the city and are very precariously positioned prompting the administration to take a decision to demolish them under the disaster management act.

The personnel of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Re Response Force (SDRF) are leading the demolition operation. It would take at least seven days for the administration to accomplish the task of dismantling these dilapidated structures. On Thursday the demolition process started after the owners of these hotels left with their belongings. The traffic on the Badrinath highway was stopped on Thursday before the start of the demolition process. An electric pole near the hotel Malari Inn was removed by the crane after that the generators of both hotels were removed. The water tanks of both these hotels were also dismounted by the team involved in the operation. The demolition of the structures is being held under the guidance of a team of experts of Central Building Research Institute (CBRI), Roorkee which is adopting non blast technique to demolish the buildings.

The Inspector General (IG) of Police Garhwal range, Karan  Singh Nagnyal who was present on the spot with his force said that the process to demolish the two hotels has started and it would take about seven days to accomplish the task.

It is pertinent to mention here that a total of 760 buildings in the Joshimath city have developed cracks and 128 buildings have been declared unsafe by the administration.  A total of 169 families have so far been shifted to safer places.
