Sports minister Rekha Arya said that the cycling velodrome is the most significant sports facility established in the State during the 38th National Games while addressing the cyclists at the 77th Senior, 54th Junior and 40th Sub-Junior National Track Cycling Championships being held at Shivalik Velodrome in Rudrapur on Monday. Over 600 athletes from several States and Union Territories are participating in these championships.
Arya expressed optimism that the establishment of the cycling velodrome would soon position Uttarakhand as a central hub for cycling. “Many States are required to host cycling competitions under National Games in other states due to the limited availability of such facilities across the country,” she said.
She emphasised the importance of local athletes regularly training at the velodrome, stating that this would help them become serious contenders for medals in the upcoming Commonwealth Games in 2030 and Olympics in 2036.
