CS orders strict action against disruptive behaviour during Kanwad Yatra, orders bans on big DJ sound systems

Authorities will take strict action against those found indulging in disruptive activities, substance abuse or any form of obstruction during the upcoming Kanwad Mela. Chief secretary Anand Bardhan directed officials to act firmly against individuals involved in such behaviour and ordered a ban on large DJ sound systems during the Mela. He stated this in a review meeting held on Monday to assess preparations for the annual Kanwad Mela. This year, the Kanwad Mela will take place from July 11 to 23. The Panchak period will be observed from July 13 to 17, Dak Kanwad from July 20 to 23, and Jalabhishek on Shravan Shivratri will be held on July 23. Considering this, Bardhan instructed departments and executing agencies concerned to complete all arrangements in a timely manner. He emphasised the importance of coordination among departments to ensure smooth operations during the event. Bardhan warned that any negligence in basic facilities like sanitation, drinking water supply, parking arrangements or public toilets will invite strict action against the responsible departments and agencies. He directed municipal bodies to ensure regular sanitation, adequate toilet facilities and proper parking arrangements. He directed Jal Sansthan to maintain uninterrupted drinking water availability. He also directed authorities to monitor food items regularly and prevent overcharging. Bardhan also advised timely consultation on inter-district and inter-state issues, particularly with Uttar Pradesh, to avoid last-minute confusion. He instructed that necessary directives be issued after holding timely meetings with all concerned agencies. The Irrigation department has been asked to ensure cleanliness and safety at bathing ghats and bridges. The district magistrate and senior superintendent of police of Haridwar presented a detailed overview of the arrangements made in Haridwar which is the main point of the Mela. The presentation covered traffic routes, fixed and temporary parking areas, crowd management and security measures. The traffic plan includes route diversions for incoming and outgoing vehicles. Haridwar SSP Pramendra Dobhal informed that the Kanwad Mela area has been divided into 16 super zones, 23 zones and 134 sectors for effective management. The administration has also identified permanent and temporary infrastructural requirements and the corresponding budgetary provisions. The officials from Dehradun, Pauri and Tehri districts also shared updates on their preparations and budget needs. The additional director general of police (Crime, Law and Order) V Murugesan, Garhwal commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey, inspector general KS Nagnyal and senior administrative and police officers from Haridwar, Dehradun, Pauri and Tehri and others were also present in the meeting.
