Recruitment of assistant professors- 50 % posts remain vacant

Though the Medical Education department of Uttarakhand is patting its back for recruitment of 171 assistant professors in the government medical colleges of the State the fact is that the Uttarakhand Medical Services Selection Board (UKMSSB) was able to recruit only 50 per cent of the candidates against the advertised posts. The UKMSSB has recently conducted a process of recruitment for 333 posts of assistant professors in 25 different subjects. However it could recruit only 171 assistant professors and as many as 168 posts remained vacant. Considering the past record it is very likely that many of the recruited assistant professors would not join the service offered to them.

The non availability of the candidates of reserved categories was the reason for the setback on the state government’s bid to appoint permanent faculty members in the government medical colleges of the state.  In radio-diagnosis, the board could recruit only one candidate and four posts have remained vacant. In surgery only ten candidates were recruited out of a total 24 advertised posts. Similarly 12 posts out of 22 remained vacant in gynaecology and obstetrics.

The chairman of the UKMSSB, Dr DS Rawat told The Pioneer that about 150 posts in the reserved categories remained vacant. He said that the board would start a fresh process to recruit candidates of the reserved categories.

It is pertinent to mention here that the posts of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes would continue to remain vacant till the candidates of these categories are found. The department cannot fill these posts with the general category candidates.

It is also worth mentioning here that the government medical colleges are suffering from shortage of faculty. As per the National Medical Commission (NMC) there is a 30 per cent shortage of faculty in Srinagar and Almora medical colleges.

The newly recruited candidates would be appointed in the pay scale of Rs 67,700 to Rs 2,08,700 and would be deployed in the vacant posts in the government medical colleges of the state. In Uttarakhand there are four functional government medical colleges; the Government Doon Medical College, Medical College Haldwani, Veer Chandra Singh Garhwali Medical College Srinagar and Almora medical college.
