Counselling for street kids to start today

For the second phase of Operation Mukti, police department and stake holders have started to conduct awareness drives in the form of rallies and special programmes in schools and malls. The motive is to raise public awareness regarding the harmful effects of giving money to child beggars.

Circle Officer (city) Shekhar Suyal who is also the nodal officer of the campaign said, “We have started to conduct awareness drives in the city to raise public awareness on the negative effects of giving money to child beggars. It encourages them to keep on begging. It is important to stop both those begging and those giving money in response. For that we are speaking to students from different schools daily and getting positive response from them. We also conducted a mass outreach programme at Pacific Mall.”

When asked about the counselling of children found involved in begging and their parents he said, “A dedicated team will start working on that from Saturday onward. The idea is to connect them with some skill development programme and enroll them in schools if they’ve not been enrolled yet.”

Deepa Sharma, counsellor from Childline helpline said, “Childline, anti-human trafficking unit and Aasra Trust with the help of police conducted a rally at Clock Tower to raise public awareness on the encouragement people are unintentionally giving to child beggars to continue begging.”
