Cong mayoral candidate arrested in dowry case

Party alleges political pressure behind the arrest

A couple of days after results of the urban local body elections were declared, the Congress mayoral candidate in Kashipur, Mukta Singh and her husband were arrested by the police in a dowry harassment case. They were presented in the court by the police in the evening from where they were sent to Haldwani jail. There was an upheaval in the local political scene in Kashipur on Thursday when Congress mayoral candidate Mukta Singh and her husband Ravindra Singh were arrested by the police on being reportedly found guilty in a dowry harassment case filed by their daughter-in-law. As the news of the Singh couple being arrested and taken to Kotwali reached the local Congress members, former MP KC Singh ‘Baba’ and Congress city head Sandeep Sehgal along with dozens of party members also reached the police station. Since the arrests were made shortly after the local body elections, the Congress members alleging that the action was taken under political pressure, sat outside the police station gate and staged a protest demonstration. According to the case details, Priyanka Singh had lodged a dowry harassment case against her husband Shashank Singh, mother-in-law Mukta Singh, father-in-law Ravindra Singh and two others on September 28, 2018. The complainant has accused Mukta Singh and four other members of her family of aborting her pregnancy twice following her inability to provide a dowry. Priyanka had first submitted an application in the women helpline during November 2017 stating that she had been married to Shashank Singh in December 2011. Her father had gifted a car and other valuables to her in-laws at that time. Things remained normal for some time but later on, her in-laws allegedly started harassing her for dowry. They reportedly demanded Rs 50 lakh and a car. Due to her inability to fulfill their demand, her husband Shashank, in-laws Mukta Singh and Ravinder Singh, brother in law Anurag and his wife Deepali allegedly started misbehaving and assaulting her. She was made to undergo abortion twice, she alleged. Due to these reasons, she went to live with her parents in May 2015. In November 2017, a meet was reportedly held in her home which was attended by her husband and in-laws. The accused reportedly became angry due to the inability of the woman’s family to meet their demands and told her to return only with the demanded dowry. After counseling in the women helpline, the case was sent to the family court. read more posts… Friday, 23 November 2018 | PNS | Kashipur–
