Cong rally causes major traffic jam in city’s core area
The protest rally of the Congress party which took place on Saturday caused traffic havoc in the city despite efforts of the police to maintain a smooth flow of traffic. Though a considerable number of police personnel were deployed in the city to ensure free flow of traffic and for contingency purposes, they could not assist the people stuck in jam because of the rally.
Traffic was severely affected on various roads in the core area of the provisional state capital due to the protest rally. First the traffic on the busy Rajpur Road was affected by the rally and as it reached the Clock Tower, the effect spread further on the roads converging at this point. The traffic was disrupted on all the busy main roads from Chakrata Road to Rajpur Road even though the police and traffic police were seen guiding the commuters tactfully. The road which connects Darshan Lal Chowk to Subhash Road was also jam packed.
The wait for the situation to improve enough to enable vehicular traffic to crawl forward was so long that many commuters started complaining about such events among each other. One of the commuters stuck in the traffic jam said that protests and rallies should be banned while another citizen questioned the purpose of the rally. “These rallies and protests do not help anyone but political parties only,” said one of the commuters stuck in traffic. “Mostly those people participate in these protests who do not have any job or anything better to do,” opined another.
Many commuters were seen taking pictures of the jam and the police personnel posted at the Clock Tower. One commuter even said that he doesn’t remember when he last saw so many police personnel together at one place in Dehradun.
Another commuter said that at a time when the city is already facing major traffic issues due to over population and rising number of vehicles, such rallies pose a major disturbance in the routine lives of citizens.
