34 senior citizens leave for Badrinath

2nd group sent on pilgrimage under tourism dept’s scheme

In latest Uttarakhand news, a group of 34 pilgrims have left for Badrinath shrine under the Uttarakhand government’s ambitious scheme ‘Deendayal Upadhyaya Matri Pitri Teerthatan Yojana’. The MLA Tehri Kishore Upadhyay flagged off the Yatra and said that this scheme is meant to enable the senior citizens who could not embark on the pilgrimage on their own, given their financial status. “The State tourism department will bear the expenses related to their accommodation, fooding and transportation,” he added. The group included 13 women.

The elderly pilgrims looked pleased as they had their foreheads smeared with tilak and were garlanded before their departure on the pilgrimage. They thanked the State tourism department for taking this initiative. The Tehri district tourism development officer Atul Bhandari said that this was the second yatra under the scheme. “The first group of pilgrims left for Badrinath from tehsil Gaja on September 6. Notably, this scheme is meant for the senior citizens aged 60 and more who are not financially capable of going on the pilgrimage on their own.
