Requests classification of wildlife rescue centre establishment as forestry activities

Chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat met the Union minister of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Prakash Javadekar in the national capital on Thursday to discuss various issues related to Uttarakhand. Rawat informed the Union minister that lakhs of Uttarakhandis had returned to the state due to Covid-19. The State government has initiated Mukhyamantri Swarozgar Yojana and other schemes to facilitate employment for the returnees. A scheme has also been made to provide employment to 10,000 people under the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA). Stating that Uttarakhand has played a vital role in conservation of environment and biodiversity, the CM said that a proposal for additional Rs 262.49 crore under CAMPA for 2020-21 had also been sent to the ministry for tackling human-wildlife conflict and effectively checking forest fires. The CM requested Javadekar that this proposal be approved by the ministry.

Rawat said that wild animals, especially monkeys, boars in the mountains and blue bulls in the plains cause damage to agriculture. Wildlife rescue centres need to be established to stop incidents of leopards attacking people in the mountainous areas and damage caused to agriculture by the wild animals. Considering this requirement, the establishment of wildlife rescue centres should be brought under the classification of forestry activities. According to official sources, the Union minister has granted his approval in principle to the request made by the chief minister.
