The Chief Minister of Uttarakhand Trivendra Singh Rawat inaugurated the National Handloom Expo at the Parade Ground here on Friday. The being organised by Uttarakhand Handloom and Handicraft Development Council (UHHDC) will continue till January 12, 2020.
While inaugurating the expo, the chief minister said that the expo which is being organised in Dehradun from past many years now has benefitted the people of the city in many ways as it provides them with different types of products and clothes from across the country. People can thus buy clothes and other products from different states through this expo. He further said that craftsmen from all over the country earn good income through the expo. The CM said that everyone needs to come forward for the conservation and promotion of their traditional handicrafts and folk arts.
He said that the National Handloom Expo is a platform through which women self-help groups, cooperative societies, craftsmen and weavers from remote areas of the state are able to bring their products in a larger market. This type of event also gives an opportunity to the participating weavers and craftsmen to share their experiences and learn from each other.
Industries director Sudhir Nautiyal informed that more than 200 stalls from 14 states have been set up at this year’s National Handloom Expo in which 60 weavers from Uttarakhand are also participating. Shawls, Jaipuri quilts, Kanjeevaram silk, Banarasi saris, bed-sheets, bed-covers, Pashmina shawls, caps, carpets and more are available for sale at the expo. Under the handloom pavilion, special handloom products of various provinces and regions have been put on display. He said that specific products of the state under the Himadri brand name are being developed by the UHHDC. Handloom products as well as handicraft products are also being sold in the Himadri stall.
The Dehradun mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’, MLAs Khajan Das and Gopal Rawat among others were also present on the occasion.
