Bahuguna’s arrival means something is wrong within the BJP- Harish Rawat

Amid speculation that some BJP leaders with Congress background can again switch sides ahead of the assembly election of 2022 in Uttarakhand, former chief minister Vijay Bahuguna met chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami at the latter’s residence on Wednesday. It is learnt that the issue of neglect of the leaders who had defected from Congress to BJP in the year 2016 was discussed in the meeting.  Coming out of political inactivity, Bahuguna arrived in Dehradun on Tuesday. His arrival and meeting with cabinet minister Harak Singh Rawat and the BJP leaders with Congress party background gave the impression that all may not be well within the Uttarakhand unit of BJP. The tone and tenor of Bahuguna made it apparent that he had been sent on a fire-fighting mission by the BJP as leaders like Harak Singh and Raipur MLA Umesh Sharma ‘Kau’ were showing signs of having an affinity with the Congress party.

Meanwhile taking a potshot at the ruling BJP, former chief minister and head of election campaign committee of Uttarakhand Congress, Harish Rawat said that arrival of Bahuguna in Uttarakhand shows that there is something seriously wrong in the state unit of BJP and it has given some employment to Vijay Bahuguna. Rawat added that he wants the turncoats of Congress party to remain in the BJP.

After the return of former cabinet minister Yashpal Arya and his MLA son Sanjeev Arya from BJP to Congress recently speculation is rife that some more BJP leaders having Congress backgrounds can defect back to the Congress party. Recent meeting of Harak Singh Rawat and Umesh Sharma ‘Kau’ with leader of opposition (LoP) Pritam Singh and apparent breaking of ice between Harak Singh and Harish Rawat made the BJP impatient.

It is pertinent of mention here that in March 2016, Vijay Bahuguna led a mutiny during the budget session  of assembly against the then chief minister Harish Rawat in which nine MLAs of Congress party including Harak Singh Rawat, Subodh Uniyal and Umesh Sharma ‘Kau’ had joined the BJP. It is believed that some of the leaders of this group are now restless and the meeting of Bahuguna and CM Dhami is being viewed in this context.
