Cleanliness drive begins in Kanwad Mela area in Haridwar

With the crowds of Kanwadiyas starting to decrease after the Shrawan Shivratri observed on Tuesday, the Municipal Corporation of Haridwar (MCH) started a special cleaning drive in the Kanwad Mela area of Haridwar from Tuesday. The corporation was undertaking regular sanitation work in the area since July 14 but the vast number of Kanwadiyas arriving here made it tough to undertake the cleaning properly. More than 1,000 sanitation workers were deployed by MCH but more than 2.5 crore Kanwadiyas arrived in Haridwar in less than a fortnight, making the cleaning task very difficult. From the Ganga Ghats to the streets and neighbourhoods, the throngs of Kanwadiyas made it nearly impossible for the sanitation workers to clean the entire area properly. The Haridwar municipal commissioner Dayanand Saraswati told this correspondent that the MCH was fully prepared and not short of manpower. However, the huge number of Kanwadiyas had made it impossible to clean the entire area properly. The MCH has divided the Mela area into 15 zones. The Har Ki Paidi and neighbouring areas were cleaned on Tuesday evening after which the entire Mela area will be cleaned properly by the MCH, he added. The municipal commissioner himself was at Har Ki Paidi overseeing the cleaning work on Tuesday evening.

It is pertinent to mention here that the area under the MCH generates about 150 metric tonnes of solid municipal waste per day. However, the quantity of municipal waste had nearly doubled to about 300 metric tonnes during the Kanwad Yatra.
