The office of the chief electoral officer of Uttarakhand BVRC Purushottam is all set to launch a massive plantation and voter awareness campaign on the World Environment Day on June 5 during which over two lakh saplings will be planted at all the polling booths spread across the State.
In this connection, the additional chief electoral officer, Vijay Kumar Jogdande held a meeting with the officials of several departments in the secretariat on Friday. He said at the meeting that the voter awareness and plantation campaigns would go simultaneously till July-end. “There are more than 11, 700 polling booths spread across the State and we have set a target to plant 10 saplings at each polling booth. The elderly, women and young voters will be urged to plant saplings at each of these polling booths. We will ensure that every sapling to be planted during the drive is well taken care of later,” he added.
He further said that as this drive would continue throughout the month of July it would relate to the State’s folk festival Harela. “To strike an emotional chord with the voters at large, the office of the chief electoral officer has drawn up monthly themes for voter awareness programmes. For June, the theme is ‘Every drop of rain, every vote count’ and the same for July is ‘Harela ka Sandesh, Vote Bane Vishesh’. This campaign would be conducted in all the districts under the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) activities,” he added.
An online competition will also be organised on social media to encourage voters to plant trees and the enthusiastic participants of this campaign will be rewarded by the office of CEO.
Officers of the Forest, Horticulture, Urban Development, MDDA, Higher Education, Education, Women and Child Development and Panchayati Raj departments were present at the meeting.
