Censor orders changes in Pathaan over ‘sensibility’

Close on the heels of a controversy over the saffron costumes worn in a dance sequence of the film by Deepika Padukone, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has advised the makers “Pathaan”, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika, to make certain changes in the film, including in its songs, and submit a revised version.

The film made by Siddharth Anand is slated for release in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu in January 2023.

CBFC chairperson Prasoon Joshi said in a statement, “Pathaan went through the due and through examining process as per the CBFC guidelines. The committee has guided the makers to implement the advised changes in the film including the songs and submit the revised version prior to theatrical release”.

“CBFC is always committed to find the right balance between creative expression and sensibility of the audience and believe that we can always find solutions through meaningful dialogue between all stakeholders,” Joshi said.

“Whilst the process is getting duly followed and implemented I must reiterate that our culture and faith is glorious, intricate and nuanced. And we have to be careful that it does not get defined by trivia which takes the focus away from the real and the true. And like I have said earlier as well, that the trust between creators and audience is most important to protect and the creators should keep working towards it,” Joshi said.

Joshi, who is considered close to the ruling establishment at the Centre, did not share the details of the changes suggested to the makers of film”Pathaan”.

This is the second major hurdle that the film ‘Pathaan’ has faced ahead of its much-awaited release when the film’s track ‘Besharam Rang’ went online on December 12.

The song track created quite a buzz on social media circles. While many people liked the peppiness in the track starring SRK and Deepika, others found the song objectionable over the use of saffron and green costumes, so much so that  some activists staged a protest and burnt the effigies of Deepika and SRK.
