With the State government deciding to recommend a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the Ankita Bhandari murder case, the Bharatiya Janata Party has stated that the decision is a positive step in accordance with public sentiment.
The BJP State president and Rajya Sabha member Mahendra Bhatt welcomed the decision taken by chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami while stating that this will also help expose the lie being spread by the opposition. Bhatt said that the government did its bit in sending the guilty to jail while ensuring an impartial investigation in the case. However, the government took the decision regarding the CBI probe honouring the wish of Bhandari’s parents.
He said, “The opposition has been playing politics on this issue since the beginning. The CBI probe has been recommended so that there is not a speck of doubt in this case.” Responding to allegations levelled by the Congress on the government naming a government nursing college after the victim, Bhatt said that the opposition is indulging in political disinformation. He strongly condemned attempts to divide the society in the name of seeking justice for Bhandari. The BJP State chief appealed to all to stop indulging in politics in this matter.
It will be recalled here that opposition parties and various organisations held protests across the State seeking a CBI probe in the case. The State government initially justified its stand citing past directions of the Uttarakhand High Court and the Supreme Court which had rejected appeals for a CBI probe in the case.
The CM recently met the victim’s parents who later stated on social media that they had reiterated their demand for a CBI probe. A bandh had been called for in the State on January 11 by protesters but with the State government recommending a CBI probe, it remains to be seen how the opposition and other protesters respond in the coming days.
