The director of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Dehradun Saurabh Tiwari said that consumers should buy only hallmarked jewellery to ensure quality and purity. The BIS held a jewellers’ awareness programme in Bageshwar to provide information about hallmarking, quality standards and compliance processes for gold jewellery on Friday. Tiwari explained the significance of BIS certification and the hallmarking process during the programme. He said hallmarking guarantees gold purity and asked consumers to check the HUID number, carat and BIS logo when purchasing gold jewellery. BIS assistant director Saurabh Kumar Chaurasia and hallmark representative Shrikant Mishra also discussed the operation of hallmark centres, the new HUID-based hallmarking system and the requirement for hallmarking gold jewellery from 14 carat to 24 carat.
Kapkot MLA Suresh Gadia and Bageshwar municipal council chairman Suresh Khetwal also stressed the responsibility of jewellers in ensuring gold purity and securing consumer trust. They said consumers pay for gold with their hard-earned money and should be assured of its purity. BIS encouraged consumers to verify the authenticity of BIS-marked products by downloading the BIS Care app. The president of the Bageshwar Goldsmith Association, Paras Verma and other goldsmiths’ representatives were present at the event. More than 90 jewellers and traders from Bageshwar district attended the event.
